💡 We Will Never Be the Same Again (Issue 130)
The rest of the world sees us more clearly now
I remember watching the second plane fly into the World Trade Center South Tower on 9/11.
We were watching the live TV broadcast, and everyone was confused about the crash that had just occurred (i.e., when a plane struck the North Tower).
Then, the second plane hit, and everyone screamed and started crying. At that moment, everything changed. We knew it was no accident. We knew we were under attack.
We also should have realized that the U.S. would never be the same again.
Some of us remember life before that moment. We remember traveling without security lines, endless scans, taking off shoes, and removing clothing.
We thought it would be temporary.
Well, that was over 23 years ago. What’s flying like for you now?
Are you still walking through detectors and standing inside body scanners?
Removing things from your carry-on bags?
Keeping your liquids under 3.4 ounces?
Are you still taking off your shoes?
We all are.
And we are now facing another one of those forever transformations in the U.S.
The rest of the world saw how fragile American democracy is and how quickly one tyrant could destroy our economy in a matter of days.
“The S&P 500 has lost $5.83 trillion in market value, for its steepest four days of losses since the index was created in the 1950s, following President Donald Trump's unveiling of hefty global tariffs against U.S. trading partners late on Wednesday.” (source)
Most of the world will never trust the U.S. again (at least in our lifetimes). How can you blame them after the administration has been threatening Canada, Greenland, Panama, China, and all of Europe? They will strengthen their alliances and flow of trade amongst each other, excluding the U.S.
Life in America will never be the same again. Our economy may recover. We may climb back out of the impending recession. We may have a new President someday—if we don’t end up with a dictator for life.
However, we will never be the same.
No one realized that our government, our freedoms, and our democracy were this insanely fragile. The supposed checks and balances of our three branches of government were an illusion. The President is behaving like a fascist leader, and no one is stopping him.
We will never feel safe again.
We will never feel financially secure again.
The rest of the world will never fully trust us again.
You will experience this if and when you travel outside the country again. Thanks to the tariffs and impending global trade war, you will feel it in your bank account as you keep shopping and inflation rises. You will realize it when you struggle to find new jobs as U.S. companies continue to lay off thousands and thousands of employees.
What’s my point?
Well, the longer we let the country slide into fascism, the harder it will be to stop. Like cancer, it will spread and dig its dark tendrils into every facet of our government and businesses. And once a cancer metastasizes, the harder it is to eradicate fully and survive.
My wife and I attended the protests on April 5th. Seeing so many people out on the streets fighting to be heard was great. We realized we were not alone.
But we need more people! We need to reach protest numbers that show the government that we will not be ignored. Millions of us can’t be silenced, arrested, and disappeared.
The next National Day of Action is on April 19th. Join us in the streets! Organizers reported that over 5 million people across the U.S. took part in the "Hands Off!" protests on April 5th, across over 1,400 events nationwide.
We need to get that number up to 12 million protestors!
Nonviolent protests are twice as likely to succeed as armed conflicts – and those engaging a threshold of 3.5% of the population have never failed to bring about change. (source)
