š” Tired of Fake Online āPerfectionā? Go Touch a Glacier (Issue 158)
You should escape unreality every week
Someone recently posted that āreality felt underwhelming because a perfect video was always one swipe away online.ā
Iām sorry, but I couldnāt disagree more, since I have experienced the opposite. I am increasingly bored with all the fake, over-edited stuff (donāt get me started on AI crap). Itās made me crave more real-world experiences.
The more I explore the wonders of this world (and put my damn phone away), the more I am overwhelmed with its beauty and magic. You need to be exceedingly present, though.
If you half-a$$ your real-world adventures with your phone in one hand, you will miss the magical moments and sensory pleasures of it all. You will be a shadow of yourself, trying to surf the shallow waters of physical existence with one foot in the online fake world. Yes, I take photos and videos while hiking (one of the hazards of running a business and creating marketing content). But I try to minimize that, put my phone away after capturing some videos and photos, and enjoy the rest of the hike.
Nothing Iāve seen online (or using a VR headset) can compare to the real-world experiences of hiking up a mountain in Alaska, touching a cold glacier, sleeping in a cozy cabin on a mountaintop, cooking over a fire as you watch the sunset, or sipping that first cup of coffee as you watch the sunrise and hear birds singing.
All of this online stuff, fake AI videos, and pretend experiences pale compared to a real-life experience that touches all five senses at once. Oh, Iām sure someone somewhere is working on a complete sensory VR system. But Iāll most likely be dead by thenāand I still prefer getting out into actual nature.
Thatās why my wife and I take a day off every week to leave the online world behind. We hike or ski all day, have a fun meal somewhere out, and enjoy each otherās company away from the feeds. Itās our weekly date day. Good for our bodies, minds, and marriage!
