Your car would break down if you drove it nonstop for thousands of miles without stopping long enough for an oil change or other preventive maintenance.
You and your body aren’t that different.
As much as we need to continue resisting and participating in saving our democracy right now, we also need to keep ourselves “tuned up” to function well. You need sleep, exercise, recreation, good food, and stress reduction.
I was feeling like “my machine” was breaking down over the past few weeks.
I wasn’t sleeping well
My stress levels were high
I couldn’t focus on my work
My short-term memory suffered
My relationships were also struggling
Everyone must discover the stress-relief solutions that work best for them. I know what my solutions are:
Physical exercise
Time in nature.
The weather is finally turning nice. So, we’ve been taking our daily walks again. I've written and recorded a podcast episode about the benefits of that before.
Nicer weather also means I can open the door on my little shed and lift weights in my happy space again. Loud music and a focus on my physical form help my noisy mind stop spinning on stuff for a while.
We’re also stepping up our longer hikes every Wednesday (e.g., in the forest, up mountains, and down to rivers) and trail runs on the weekends. Time in nature always seems to heal me.
What have you found works for you? How are you reducing your stress levels and engaging in some self-care?
