💡 Remember Who You Were Before the World Told You Who to Be (Issue 155)
Take a moment to listen to the voice inside
“Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?”
- Charles Bukowski
Even as a child, this is what I wanted. A small, simple, cozy cabin in the woods.
It is what I envisioned as my final destination when I eventually escaped the hustle and bustle of modern society. No more noise, commotion, and scrambling.
I never wanted a mansion, a yacht, or fancy dinner parties with high society. That kind of life never appealed to me.
I always preferred the quiet solitude of the forest. The awe of being surrounded by majestic mountains. The peace that came with sitting by a dancing stream.
So, I guess that’s why it was easier for me to slip away from “the noisy party,” leave the city, and escape the clutches of materialism that would have kept me bound to the corporate hamster wheel for the rest of my working days.
One day, I woke up and realized I no longer had any interest in the hollow promises of what that life offered. It always left me feeling empty, no matter how many nice things I purchased.
That urban lifestyle wasn’t me, but I had forgotten the “real me” as I scrambled up the ladder I was told to climb. I couldn’t remember the boy I used to be, with his dreams of a peaceful future.
Well, I finally listened to the quiet voice inside. The child who had only wanted peace, solitude, and fulfillment. Who only wanted “enough.”
I hopped off the corporate ladder to find my personal path to a simpler life, centered on family, health, wellness, and gratitude. I walked away from the endless cycle of wanting more, buying more, owning more.
And now I have enough. Just… enough.
I hope you can listen to that little voice inside of you one day and find your “enough” too. What would that look like for you?
