3-4 hours/day!
I checked the āScreen Timeā settings on my phone (how to do this on Android phones) last week and was horrified to see that was how much time I was spending on social media apps every day.
I do use social media for marketing my businesses, but that usually takes about an hour. What was going on? Well, as an American, I was swept up in election doom scrolling.
It wasn't healthy,Ā and it's still not healthy. I donāt know about you, but I canāt spend the next four years feeling this way and wasting that much of my precious time.
So, I took action to redirect my energy into something that gives me purpose: finishing my books. In the past week, Iāve made more progress on two of my books than Iāve made in all of this year's prior months.
I also took these steps to reclaim my time and protect my well-being:
I deleted the Twitter account Iāve had since 2007, leaving thousands of followers there.
I made a final post on Instagram telling people they could find me here instead (i.e., my Substack newsletters), then deleted the app from my phone.
I made a final post on Facebook, but I still have it on my phone just to check a couple of essential private groups that provide me support for my current medical issue. I no longer check the feed.
I made a few posts on Threads to wrap that up and directed people to my Substack newsletters.
I now have a Bluesky account that I use to share stuff. Itās nice to have a platform that billionaires donāt control.
So, Iām redirecting my time and energy into places and efforts that will have a better ROI for my future. I donāt want to give away my creativity and activity for free, with nothing in return.
Yes, it's essential to be informed about world and national events. But social media is a terrible channel for that. Instead, I subscribed to 1440 and read a digest of news every day.
Quality journalism instead of misinformation.
Useful news instead of nasty trolls.
Awareness instead of anxiety.
The social media monster benefits from our fear, hate, and anxiety. It feeds our addictions, so it can steal our time and energy to feed its ad platforms.
The value the monster returns isnāt worth the cost to your emotional and mental health. Instead, focus on your purpose and feed your time and energy into that.
