💡 Long Journeys and Deep Conversations (Issue 113)
Flying over flies past opportunities to connect
Flying is fast and convenient, but it’s not so great for deep personal conversations.
When I was a child, my family took long road trips to reach our vacation destinations and visit extended family. We never flew anywhere together.
However, as an adult, flying became a primary way to reach destinations. We often flew with our kids to visit family and take vacations. But we also took a lot of road trips.
In fact, we’re on one right now. We drove from our home in California to spend Thanksgiving with some family members in Utah. Two of our older children flew in from Alaska to join us.
What I’ve noticed is that we have much deeper, extended conversations on our road trips vs. when we fly. It makes total sense, of course. It’s hard to have a deep conversation about personal topics on a plane surrounded by strangers.
The other cool thing is we’ve seen so much more of America than many people who treat much of it like flyover territory. Most people want to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible. It’s a real shame because this country is incredibly beautiful.
The focus is on reaching the destination, which I understand. But it's unfortunate that you miss an opportunity to connect more deeply with the people you care most about when you do that.
Yeah, I know. Driving for hours and hours and hours in a vehicle often feels onerous. But that long journey has surprising benefits if you see it as a rare chance to experience things you never can on a crowded fast flight.

I've spent a lot of time having great car conversations in the last month or so! First I took a roadtrip to L.A. and back for a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Then my mom was visiting California for Thanksgiving and we drove her all over the SF Bay Area from San Jose to San Francisco to Sonoma.
