Doing the hard things now makes life easier later.
It sure is tempting to take the easy path, but that will make your life harder later.
Getting educated.
Investing in yourself.
Working out every day.
Learning public speaking.
Dealing with issues immediately.
Many people are addicted to making life easier — at least, that’s what I see in the U.S. They want shortcuts. They seek comfort. They put off the hard things and keep “kicking the can down the road.”
“I’ll do it someday.”
“I’ll deal with that later.”
“That's too hard!”
“That's too risky!”
“I’m too old to do that.”
I often see this in my career coaching business. Putting in the hard work now makes finding a job easier later.
Connecting and reconnecting with people in your broader network every week.
Creating content to put into the world every day so people know you exist, what you do, and how you think.
Preparing so well that you sound supremely confident when you do start interviewing.
I also see it with health and wellness. Cooking healthier meals and consistently making time to work out makes your everyday life easier later.
Moving heavy things around the house, doing yard work, using the stairs, climbing ladders, etc.
Going hiking, running, or skiing with younger friends and family.
Traveling and walking around new cities from morning till night.
I’m in my 50s now, so I'm seeing the consequences of decisions some of my friends and acquaintances made in their 20s and 30s.
Those who took the easy path of not growing, working out, and taking care of themselves are now struggling and look way older than the rest of us.
Those who invested in themselves daily, despite it being hard, look younger and are way more active (e.g., traveling, dancing, playing sports).
It’s never too late to make a positive change, though. Is it hard? Of course, it is.
But, choose your hard.
The hard work to stay younger, healthier, active, and sharp?
Or the hard daily life of someone in an aging decline?
