I sometimes share photos of my food on Instagram. Yeah, I know. That makes me ā€œbasic,ā€ right? Or does that mean I’m ā€œmidā€? I can’t keep up with the latest slang…

Inevitably, someone says something rude about it:

  • ā€œOh, yuck. I hate Brussels sprouts.ā€

  • ā€œThat looks good if you remove the pickles. They’re gross.ā€

  • ā€œNice BLT, but take off the tomatoes. Yuck.ā€

What the heck? Who does that?

I’ve encountered variations of this behavior frequently over the years:

  • Someone once made negative comments about a striped shirt I was wearing.

  • Another person said they didn’t like my new car.

  • A coworker told me I made a mistake with the phone I purchased.

  • A friend said I was stupid for doing Crossfit.

Gee, thanks for that input!

I don’t get it.

There’s no need for that kind of behavior. Maybe it’s just me, but it feels rude and disrespectful. I would never put down someone’s choice about something they like. Let them enjoy it!

Be kind and move on. Keep your negative opinion to yourself.

Has everyone forgotten the basics?

  • ā€œDo unto others as you would have them do unto you.ā€

  • ā€œIf you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.ā€

This should translate to online behavior, too. If you see something you don’t like in your social media feed, scroll past it and move on with your day. You don’t need to chime in with a rude comment or start a fight in the comments section.

Be kind and support people, or move on and leave them alone.
