💡 How I Beat 40 Years of Back Pain (Issue 165)
Eliminating the back pain I had experienced since my childhood
Here’s some counterintuitive health advice:
If your back hurts, you may need to strengthen it more and stop babying it so much.
DISCLAIMER: This advice isn’t for everyone, of course. Your back issues may be different from mine. I am not a medical professional or a certified trainer. Please consult your doctor before starting any exercise program.
Okay, now back to my backstory. My back used to hurt all the time. I experienced lots of lower-back pain, aches, and stiffness since my teen years. Heck, I even remember my lower back bothering me when I was a little kid! So, for most of my life, I babied my back and tried to avoid lifting heavy things and straining it.
However, about 17 years ago, I started lifting weights and got into deadlifting and squatting heavy weights. Importantly, I had a professional coach train me in proper lifting techniques, provide a solid program, and demonstrate safe lifting techniques (e.g., bracing to protect the spine).
As my back grew and became stronger, the muscles around my spine stabilized everything. Within a few years, my back pain disappeared and never returned. It was surprising and wonderful!
I’m in my late 50s now, and I still lift heavy weights 4-5 times/week. My back never bothers me anymore.
Of course, consult your doctor and engage a professional coach before embarking on a similar journey. However, if your back pain is due to weak muscle support, lifting may help!
