“May you live in interesting times.”
Well, my fellow Americans, we are certainly cursed with that right now. A day doesn’t go by without some new interesting thing happening.
Remember: Dealing with this chaos is a marathon, not a sprint. So, you must step away from your big and tiny screens to take care of yourself, at least a little, every day.
I know I annoy people with all my talk of exercise, outdoor activity, time in nature, and taking care of physical, emotional, and mental health. Sorry about that!
A troll attacked me a few weeks ago when I shared a photo of one of my hikes. How dare I get outside and try to recover at a time like this! Yeah, I blocked her.
You only get one body and one life. You can push things hard for a few decades when you are younger. I sure did! Perhaps a younger person can handle all the doomscrolling and resulting stress on a 24/7 basis.
However, you start paying the piper in your late 40s, 50s, and beyond. I'm sorry, but it's inevitable.
The longer you wait to find a better balance between staying informed and staying healthy, the steeper the price will be. And, sometimes, you can't fix what's broken later. I’ve seen that.
I don't want you to make some of the mistakes that others couldn't recover from. A few of those people are no longer with us.
So, please take care of yourself!
My wife and I have been hiking and running a lot more now that the weather is finally nice up here. I’m also doing my best to manage my screen time and take breaks from the depressing and anxiety-producing news. And, apparently, my body is happy with that!
