💡 Create an Emergency Plan for Your Loved Ones (Issue 121)
Where will you meet if everything goes sideways?
Now that my children are grown, our family has scattered far apart. When they were younger, and we lived in the same house in California, we had an emergency plan for getting back together after an earthquake (something that is relatively common where we lived).
So, we identified a location where we could meet if we couldn’t return to our home, and phone services failed us. That actually did happen once during a large storm.
Unfortunately, in the U.S., we now face another potential disaster that could make it hard for our family to reconnect. Travel might become more challenging. Communication may have issues, too.
Therefore, we need to have a family conversation about how and where we will gather in person if it becomes necessary — the when, how, and where for a good rendezvous point.
I’m not trying to be dramatic with a “the sky is falling” message for you. But, like with everything in my life, I’m a planner. And, I never create a Plan A and blissfully assume everything will go perfectly well. I also make backup plans.
Similarly, I recommend creating a backup plan for the people you care most about. Of course, we all hope things will eventually settle down and turn out well despite the current chaos, confusion, worry, and fear.
Hey, lucky you if you’re not feeling any of those emotions right now! But many of us aren’t thrilled about what’s going on and the implications for the future.
If things go sideways in a really bad way, you will want to know that your loved ones are safe. You will want to be together to weather the storm, trust me.
So, start talking with them now and make a Plan B that everyone understands. Then, you won’t have to worry about how to communicate and find each other later if that becomes incredibly challenging for some reason (do I really need to spell out that reason?).
Take care of yourselves, and stay safe!
