Maybe this is just a problem in the U.S.? Supposedly, we have our medical records stored digitally and online now. If that’s the case, why do I need to keep filling out my medical history every time I visit my doctor and especially when I start seeing a new one?
It’s such a pain!
I guess I didn’t worry too much about it when I was younger. Most of the questions didn’t apply to me, yet.
No surgeries.
No medications.
No medical issues.
However, as you grow older, that all changes. Now, I’m digging deep in my memories and documents trying to figure out when I had that appendectomy. When did I break that bone? When did I have walking pneumonia?
Ugh, I can’t remember. And it seems to irritate my doctor that I don’t know the exact dates. 😂
So, this tip is helpful even if you don’t have children. As time goes on, it sure is nice to copy and paste all of your medical history vs. recreating it every time someone needs it.
We’ve also started capturing this info for our children. Now that they are all adults, they have medical appointments on their own. Documenting their extended medical history is such a pain (e.g., which grandfather had what condition?)!
So, we created a document that captures:
Our medical history (i.e., mother and father)
The medical issues for extended family members (e.g., grandparents)
The cause of death for some family members (e.g., great-grandparents)
I wish my parents had created something like this for me! It would have saved me a lot of time over the past decades.
