We just spent two weeks in Mexico in an apartment in Puerto Vallarta. I can confirm what the article below references. No, you cannot flush toilet paper.
The local plumbing rarely supports it. Instead, they usually provide a small trash can in the bathroom for the used paper. You can read the article to learn why this is the case, but I recommend the solution below, which helps address the issue no matter where you travel.
This isnāt the first time Iāve encountered a similar situation with old plumbing that doesnāt handle toilet paper. It was the same when I was at a quaint little hotel in Crete, Greece.
Of course, the idea of putting used toilet paper in a trash can kind of freaks out the average American, who may not travel far and wide in this world. Without going into unnecessary detail, letās just say the smell of a trash can like that will quickly become quite unpleasant.
This is less of an issue if the bathroom provides a bidet. Unfortunately, that isnāt always the case. Our apartment in Mexico, for example, did not have a bidet installed. This is when a portable travel bidet comes to the rescue! I purchased one a few years ago, and it has come in handy on international trips, camping trips to remote cabins, etc.
You should do your own research when purchasing a travel bidet, but I selected the Happy Bottom portable bidet for a few reasons:
It had good reviews.
Itās a family-owned small business.
The design is light and portable.
The nozzle/sprayer is angled and can rotate.
It provides a decent water capacity.
No batteries or electricity are required.
Itās pretty easy to use!
Iāve also installed bidets in our home. My only regret is that I spent most of my life without understanding how amazing they are (e.g., their cleanliness and environmental friendliness). Americans could learn a thing or two from our international friends!
