💡 Life Tip - Embrace Boredom (Issue #82)
You can't generate new ideas if your brain is always a sponge
When was the last time you let yourself be bored? I mean, being totally alone with your thoughts?
Not mindlessly scrolling social media on your phone.
Not watching Netflix.
Not viewing an endless stream of videos on TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram.
Not even listening to music.
Just you and your thoughts.
In our modern world, moments of boredom are viewed as an unproductive time that could be put to a better — or more entertaining — use. Shouldn’t we be working? Checking email? Or distracting ourselves somehow?
However, those moments of “boredom” can spark creativity, lead to much-needed introspection, and help us experience mindfulness. We used to have many such moments before the internet and smartphones came along.
I know I need these quiet moments without my phone, music, etc., to get my creative juices flowing. It’s when I think about my businesses and how to improve them. That’s when I come up with new ideas for my articles and podcast episodes. These quiet moments are when I think about what I want for the future.
Running on a forest trail every Saturday with no headphones.
Skiing down a mountain every Wednesday and simply experiencing the moment.
Driving into town with the radio off, so I can do nothing but think!
So, schedule some downtime to disconnect from the internet, put your phone away, and allow your mind to wander. Try it for a few weeks and see what happens!
